Gambia: GFA Turns Down Banjul's Request

11 November 2009

Banjul — Banjul Sports Committee's request to have two of their three group fixtures in the 2009 Muhammed Yahya Jammeh's Perpetual Cup competition changed to a different venue has been turned by the organizers, the Gambia Football Association.

The capital team who share the group as arch rivals Brikama, Serrekunda East and Lamin had filed a protest shortly after the fixtures of the eight-team tournament were announced in the weekend. In a one-page protest letter to organizers of the event, the Banjul football body complained that the venues for their first and final group fixtures against Serrekunda East and Brikama respectively were unfairly scheduled and insisted on a change of venue if they are to cooperate with the organising committee.

The City Boys went further to propose to the GFA that their first fixture against Serrekunda East, which is scheduled to take place at Serrekunda East ground be moved to Serrekunda West mini-stadium, while their final fixture against Brikama be moved from Brikama Box Bar mini-stadium to Serrekunda East mini-stadium.

However, the Gambia Football Association insisted that the fixtures will remain unchanged and has since given the last year's runners up a two-day ultimatum to either indicate their participation or otherwise."Account is taken of your letter dated November 9, 2009 on the above captioned subject and to inform you that the fixtures of the championship is final and it would be very much appreciated if you could indicate your participation or otherwise in the second edition of Muhammed Yahya Jammeh's perpetual Cup competition to the secretary general on or before close of business on Wednesday November 11, 2009," a statement issued by the Gambia Football Association reads. "Please be informed that Sukuta, Bakau, Gunjur and Lamin are all disenfranchised and had to travel far and near for their scheduled championship matches and in the spirit of fair play.

Furthermore, the said fixtures, despite the noisy protest of your representative, were approved and endorsed at the meeting held on Saturday November 7, 2009 at the GFA Secretariat and attended by the eight (8) registered zones and some members of the GFA Executive Committee," added the statement, which was signed by GFA's Abdou Salaam Jammeh on behalf of secretary general Jammeh EK Bojang.
