Nigeria: Yar'Adua Vows to Punish Corrupt Public Officers

Abuja — President Umaru Yar'Adua yesterday vowed not to spare any corrupt public officer who is found wanting in the code of conduct for public servants.

The President stated this while commissioning the Code of Conduct Tribunal Headquarters/Court Complex in Jabi District, Abuja.

Yar'Adua who was represented at the occasion by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero said his government will strive to entrench probity, integrity, transparency and accountability in the conduct of government business.

His words: "I do reiterate before the entire nation on this day, that my administration will neither shield nor protect any public official who falls foul of the law or breaches the code of Conduct for public officers".

This guiding principle shall continue to be with sustained focus on the delivery of quality service to the people of this country who have graciously entrusted us with the mandate of transforming Nigeria into an economically strong, politically stable and prosperous nation.

President Yar'Adua expressed his unyielding commitment to zero tolerance for corruption as a cardinal principle of governance which is predicated on the belief that sustained growth, socio economic development and effective national regeneration that cannot be attained with corrupted and contaminated governance and political process.

He further assured the Code of Conduct Tribunal of the unstinting support of the Federal Government as it strives to entrench an enduring culture of integrity, transparency and accountability in public service in our country.

While welcoming guest to the occasion, the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Justice Constance Momoh said that the Tribunal was a product of concerted resolve by the Government to usher in a social order and emancipate Nigerians from the shackles of corruption in a nation struggling to regain its economic balance.

She assured the public officers that until and unless the charge against them is proved, beyond doubt no measure would be taken against them by the Tribunal.

The Chairman advocated for the revival of the Anti-Corruptions Forum comprising representatives of ICPC, EFCC, Code of Conduct Bureau, the Police, the SSS and NIA as well as other related bodies to identify areas of cooperation in handling offences common to their powers and harmonize their operations to the benefit of the public office holders.

Justice Momoh revealed that the edifice was constructed at the cost of N464.2 million excluding the furnishing.
