Liberia: Trial Background

11 November 2009

The Hague — Name: Charles Ghankay Taylor
Nationality: Liberian
Prosecuted by: Special Court for Sierra Leone

Plea: Not Guilty
Indicted: June 4, 2003
Trial Started: January 6, 2008

Place of Trial: The Hague, The Netherlands

Charles Taylor was in Accra, Ghana, attending peace talks, when the news came through that he had been indicted by the Special Court for Sierra Leone on June 4, 2003.

He fled back to Liberia, fearing arrest. Two months later, a deal between the United Nations, the United States, the African Union, and ECOWAS (the Economic Community of West African States) was struck to get Taylor out of Liberia. Taylor then went into exile in Nigeria.

Almost three years passed before Taylor was arrested and transferred to the Special Court for Sierra Leone. His time in Nigeria did not go unchallenged, however. Civil society and others were still pushing for him to answer the charges against him in the indictment. In Abuja, Nigeria, two Nigerian businessmen, David Anyaele and Emmanuel Egbuna-whose limbs were allegedly amputated by Taylor's forces in Liberia-challenged Taylor's asylum and sought to have him extradited to the Special Court for Sierra Leone to face justice. But the case wound its way through the courts slowly.

Eventually, the new Liberian president, former World Bank official Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, asked for Taylor to be returned to Liberia. Twenty days later, on March 25, 2006, Nigerian president, Olusdegun Obasanjo informed Johnson-Sirleaf that Liberia was "free to take former President Charles Taylor into its custody." Within 48 hours, Taylor went missing from his seaside villa in Nigeria. Nigerian officials raised the alarm and ordered his arrest. Taylor was caught by Nigerian authorities on March 29, 2006, as he tried to cross the Cameroon border in a Range Rover. Taylor was placed in a Nigerian Government jet with military guard and flown to Monrovia. Peacekeepers arrested him on the tarmac and put aboard a UN helicopter headed for Freetown, where he was handed over to the Special Court for Sierra Leone.

Citing fears over instability in Liberia if Taylor were tried in neighboring Sierra Leone, Sirleaf-Johnson backed a bid to have Taylor's trial moved to The Hague. The Dutch Government asked for a Security Council resolution to authorize the transfer, and said it would host Taylor's trial on the condition that another country agreed in advance to take Taylor after his trial finished (the United Kingdom agreed).

Security Council Resolution 1688 was passed unanimously on June 16, 2006, paving the way for Taylor to be tried by the Special Court on the premises of the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Resolution 1688 also requested "all States to cooperate to this end, in particular to ensure the appearance of former President Taylor in the Netherlands for purposes of his trial by the Special Court, and encourages all States as well to ensure that any evidence or witnesses are, upon the request of the Special Court, promptly made available to the Special Court for this purpose." After some delays, Taylor's trial began in earnest on January 7, 2008, in The Hague.

There is some element of truth in what this guy is saying as it corroborates with what he's being saying and what we know. I not a supporter of Charles Taylor, however his case is a devil you know. Obasanjo is capable of all his claims against him. We've seen US and UK adventure of selfish exploitation all over the world, while they undermine and underdevelop affrica to enable them cart away the wealth of African people. Taylor has indeed exposed their wicked plans and exploit and power control while they chant democrasy. Oh what hypocrits.

This article is making me to laugh beyond repairs. So the game was between Con Artist Naira and Con artist Liberty or J.J. Creole man say "man pass man". Meaning, no matter how smart you're, there is always some one who is smarter that you. Taylor, shouldn't tell us about people lying to him. He's lied morethan he can imagine of telling true in his life.

I'm beginning to feel sorry for Taylor, now.Especially, when he said, "he hopes he would live to look Chief Obasanjo in the face one day and ask him to tell the truth about what happened". Well, Mr. Taylor, if you entrust Chief Obasanjo with the Diamonds that you looted from Sierra Leone or anyone else, that is the end. They'll be rich on your back as you got rich out of Sierra Leone. There'll be no quick return for you to Liberia. Only if you tell the World of the secret underground that you stored your looted capital in,then maybe we can manage to give some to your remaining children in Liberia. Bravo to Chief Olusengon Obasanjo!

In his piece entitled “ White Collar War Crimes, Black African Fall Guys,”

investigative journalist Keith Snow writes:

First note that the ICC can now be viewed as a tool of hegemonic U.S. foreign policy,

where the weapons deployed by the U.S. and its allies include the accusations of, and

indictments for, human rights violations, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

To understand this, we can ask WHY NO WHITE MAN HAS YET BEEN CHARGED

with these or other offenses at the ICC (International Criminal Court) which now holds

five black African warlords and seeks to incarcerate and bring to trial another black man,

also an Arab, Omar Bashir.

Why hasn’t George W. Bush been indicted ? Or what about Donald Rumsfeld ?

Dick Cheney? Henry Kissinger? Ehud Olmert? Tony Blair?

The sad fact is that the International Criminal Court has become terribly

politicized, as has the entire international justice apparatus.

The ICC has issued indictments, for the first time in history, against a sitting head of

state. Meanwhile, according to Snow, an Israeli weapons dealer, also a reputed Mossad

operative, is revealed to be shipping weapons into Sudan with Pentagon support.

And Belgium changed its law rather than prosecute Ariel Sharon for war crimes.

The double standard cries out to us.

One country in the West, however, increasingly stands out as a place where

justice can be found?and that is Spain. With its landmark indictment of

Pinochet and its current consideration of Israeli war crimes in Lebanon and

U.S. torture in Guantanamo, we increasingly look to the Spanish Courts with

hope. It was the Spanish courts that returned indictments against Rwandan

soldiers for genocide even as the world coddles U.S. proxy Rwanda and its

leader, Paul Kagame.

Dear "Uplift", You're finally writing some sensical sentences, thank goodness. Remember that racism is racism, it doesn't just apply to whites. If you hate whites because they're white, you qualify as a racist: the same gang as whites hating black because they're black (of anything else).

HAHAHA.. The beginning of the cross examination was really funny. Brenda Hollis is not a match for taylor. i could see the smile in taylor´s lawyer face.. Taylor smartly responded to her , and even told her how to ask the questions. The OTP is not ready to take taylor down as they said.
