Liberia's Health and Social Welfare Minister Dr. Walter Gwenigale ha extended invitation to members of the West African College of Physicians (WACP) for full employment by the government of Liberia.
Dr. Gwenigale said that after protracted civil unrest most qualified and dependable Liberian Doctors that were moving the health sector of the country forward have left, noting, "due to their unceremonious departure country is facing brain drain in the sector".
Speaking at the official opening ceremony at the conference room of the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville City, Minister Gwenigale further said WACP is the only alternative Liberia has now to rescue its health sector from poor health operation.
He later recommended to the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Bernice Dahn that those who are interested in the offer should contact her to follow the procedural leading to their direct employment. The West African College of Physicians was formally inaugurated in Lagos, Nigeria on the 23rd of October 1976.
The major function of the college include; organization of professional specialist postgraduate medical training in West Africa, through formal courses, workshops and conferences; certification of specialists in the six major disciplines through a programme of examinations; accreditation of training institutions for conducting postgraduate medical training for the membership and fellowship diplomas of the college.
The annual general and specific meeting with the theme: Climate change and health: implications for the West African Sub-Region" the College Vice President and National Chairman of the Liberian Chapter , Benjamin Harris said that this year's conference theme is appropriate and extremely relevant, not only for Africa but for the world as a whole, adding climate change as the major overriding environmental issue of crisis which has the potential of impacting disastrously on the economies, health, food production and safety, national security and other dimension.
Mr. Harries said that already countries throughout the various regions of Africa are beginning to experience the effects of climate change and global warming with alarming results.
"We trust that this conference will bring to the forefront of the national consciousness the need to make evidence based decisions geared towards combating and averting potential tragedy", he said.
