The Gambia Press Union USA branch has voted in a new executive board that will steer the affairs of the media body for the next two years. They replace the outgoing executive that was headed by veteran journalist Baba Galleh Jallow.
Jallow was not available for re-election as he opted not to vie for any post, leaving his seat as Secretary General wide open for grabs. The election process, conducted via a conference call on Sunday, November 8, 2009, went smoothly and in a cordial manner. Demba Baldeh, outgoing Public Relations Officer in the previous executive was voted Secretary General to head the new Executive. Other elected officials of the new executive are; Babucarr Ceesay assistant Secretary General, Cherno Baba Jallow Public Relations Officer, Lamin Jatta Treasurer, Pa Samba Jow Auditor and Modou Nyang as Social Affairs Secretary.
Earlier before nominations and elections proceedings, the former Secretary General Baba Galleh Jallow, thanked the members for joining the conference call as he welcomed new ones into the organization. Also making a comment during the proceedings was Pa Samba Jow who commended the outgoing executive for the service they have rendered in the past two years.
Also taking part in the elections were some prominent members of the USA based Gambian journalists like Fatou Jaw Manneh and Joe Sambou.
At the end of the elections Baba Galleh, Haruna Darbo and Christine Sukuna were co-opted to serve as honorary members in the new executive. The new executive includes two new members while the rest have held different positions in the previous administration. Holders of office in the previous executive were Baba Galleh Jallow, Secretary General, Fatou Jaw Manneh Deputy Secretary General, Demba Baldeh PRO, Joe Sambou Treasurer, Lamin Jatta Auditor and Emuran Saidy Social Affairs Secretary.
The term of the current executive expires on December 31st, 2009.
