Zimbabwe: Double Tragedy Hits Harare West MUMC

12 November 2009

Harare — TRAGEDY has struck Harare West MUMC which lost two of its members within two weeks.

Frazer Mhundwa (73) who was reported to have been suffering from cancer of the kidneys died on October 23, while another group member Synoden Musandu (59) who was suffering from a back bone problem died the following week on November 3.

The two were pioneers of the group that is known all over the country.

The 33-member-group, which started off with 26 members was established in 1995 and its debut album was entitled Mwari Mubatsiri Wangu.

Vabvuwi hymns had become a force to reckon with, particularly with its fusion of drums and tambourine beat that showed much expertise and talent.

The popular hit songs Upenyu hwangu nemasimba, Ndofamba Ndofamba, Mwari baba mune simba and

tiri Vawadzani are songs that most people often sing along to.

Mhundwa, who was the group treasurer and backing vocalist, was part of this marvellous team which dedicated itself to spread God's message through music.

The group's spokesperson Tawanda Kandemeri attested to this saying he dedicated not only his time, but also his resources.

"He used to offer his transport to the group without asking for money in return," he said.

Musandu on the other hand was the chaplain, the one who used to stand in front leading the songs.

The group said he was a fountain of knowledge who would always have a wise word to say to members or friends.

Tawanda said they would miss the two, saying they left footprints in everyone's hearts.

"Not only will we miss them as members, we shall also miss them as people who were always a source of inspiration as they showed passion for whatever they did," he said.

He, however, said in their honour they should soldier on with the gospel and continue to do it through music.

Musandu, whose wife passed away some time ago, is survived by six children while Mhundwa is survived by his wife and eight children.
