Zimbabwe: High School Murder - Suspects Granted Bail

12 November 2009

Harare — CHINHOYI High School sports director Joseph Mpala and caretaker Lameck Katungunde who were implicated in the murder of a student, Moreblessing Musiiwa, have been released on US$200 bail each.

The two, who were being represented by Mr Mike Mutsvairo of Mushonga, Mutsvairo and Associates, successfully applied for bail before High Court judge Justice Felistas Chatukuta yesterday.

Justice Chatukuta, however, ordered Mpala (42) and Katungunde (23) not to interfere with State witnesses.

They were also ordered to reside at their given addresses and not to set foot on Chinhoyi High School unless they are accompanied by the investigating officer in the case.

The two are also required to report once every Friday at CID Chinhoyi between 6am and 6pm.

Mpala and Katungunde were arrested last month after being implicated in the alleged murder of Musiiwa who was allegedly struck with a cricket bat.

Chinhoyi magistrate Mr Ngoni Nduna had denied them bail since the court has no jurisdiction over such cases.

The State case is built on the accounts of witnesses who saw the two chasing Musiiwa at the back of the storeroom armed with a cricket bat.

Mpala allegedly went to the pool on October 22 at around 5pm and found 30 students swimming.

He allegedly ordered them out of the pool to inspect to see if they had proper swimming gear. Mpala, the State alleges, told about 13 students that did not have the required attire to stand aside before caning them.

Musiiwa ran to the back of the building adjacent to the pool with Mpala and Katungunde in hot pursuit.

They allegedly caught up with him whereupon Mpala allegedly struck him once on the head with the cricket bat while Katungunde held him.

Musiiwa fell unconscious and the two tried in vain to resuscitate him.

They allegedly kept the body hidden in the pump house and about two days later, they allegedly threw the body in the pool to conceal the murder and pass it off as drowning.

Mpala allegedly conveniently found the body floating in the pool on October 24.
