Uganda: Man Arrested Over Coloured Waragi

Despite the many deaths associated with consumption of adulterated waragi and a major crackdown against sellers, a man in Jinja is accused of taking the craft to another level.

Mr Ronald Kwagala has resorted to colouring ordinary waragi, packaging it and selling it to pharmacies, local clinics and hair salons as methylated spirit.

He was arrested on Tuesday after a tip off.

This has prompted the National Drug Authority to call for a thorough investigation of Mr Kwagala's activities because the body suspects he has been dealing in manufacturing counterfeit drugs in a rented house at Butembe town, about four kilometres from Jinja.

According to Mr Zaidi Mwondha, the drug inspector for the South Eastern Region, the suspect had 26 cartons of GV and 180 litres of local brew labeled "Ken Blue Methylated Spirit". He said the confiscated products had no dates of manufacture and expiry.

He said three people have been arrested in Iganga District over similar crimes in the past while six have been arrested across the country .
