About 30 private primary and secondary schools in Kabale District were on Tuesday closed over lack of required operational standards.
The Assistant Inspector of Schools, Mr Grace Munyambabazi, said congestion in dormitories and absence of a resident nurse are some of the reasons for the closure.
Congestion
"We observed that there is congestion in dormitories," she said, adding: "Some students were either sharing beds or sleeping on the floor because we found two mattresses on each bed during inspection."
He said majority of the schools have poor latrine facilities with most of them filled up thus posing a health threat to the lives of the students.
Mr Munyambabazi said two secondary schools were also closed in Kabale Town because of a dysentery outbreak resulting from poor disposal of faeces.
He said the next step will be rooting out private school investors who are not providing quality education to students.
Mr Munyambabazi said many students have been complaining that they pay school fees without getting quality education, a factor she says is contributing to poor grades in schools.
The district town clerk, Mr Johnson Baryantuma Munono, who on Tuesday led the inspection team, said they want to ensure quality education.
Promote standards
He added: "The motive of this operation is to promote education standards."
Mr Munini said 30 private schools were closed but some were allowed to operate and close immediately after the students have completed their examinations.
