Uganda: Storm Hits Lira Town, Destroys Property

Hudson Apunyo

12 November 2009

A storm on Tuesday swept through Lira Town, violently tearing tops off buildings including schools, shops and the Police barracks.

Scores of people, figures Daily Monitor could not readily establish, sustained deep cuts from flying objects swept along with iron sheets.

The heavy storm started at around 8pm and lasted about 20 minutes. Montessori Nursery School, St. Mary's Primary School and Lira Police Barracks were the worst hit.

According to the Officer in-charge of Criminal Investigation Department, Mr Denis Oola, several police officers failed to report for duty as they were looking for how to repair their houses or where to shift their families.

The destruction of power lines has left most of the town without power since then. By yesterday afternoon, only Main Street had power.
