Nigeria: Ex-Militant Leader Wants More Community Projects in Niger Delta

Yenagoa — An ex-militant leader in Bayelsa State, popularly called Commander Area has charged the state government to implement more developmental projects in Niger Delta communities in order to make the people have a sense of belonging.

Also known as Olali, the ex-militant warned against the destabilization of the on-going amnesty programme in the Niger Delta region, saying: "We will resist any attempt by some cabals to disrupt the good intentions of the federal government."

The erstwhile militant warlord who handed down the warning in a chat with newsmen in Yenagoa, the state capital said he and his colleagues accepted the amnesty offer to allow for the development of the oil and gas rich, but impoverished region; especially as President Umar Musa Yar'adua has shown commitment in address the core issues in the area.

Hear him: "We are again thanking President Yar'adua for the granting of amnesty. There is now peace in Bayelsa and the region. We want the amnesty to succeed and we will not allow some selfish people and detractors to destabilize the exercise."

Olali, who operated a camp in the creek of Akassa kingdom in Brass Local Government Area (LGA), said the rural areas are in dire need of development, especially as majority of the populace reside there, hence government shout give special attention there.

In his comments, ex-commander Lagos said they were out of the creeks for good to live a normal and called on the federal government to speed up the amnesty implementation programme to engage their followers in meaningful ventures.

The two repentant militants noted the contribution of Governor Timipre Sylva and the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, Mr.Timi Alaibe for the success of amnesty in Bayelsa state.

They congratulated Mr. Alaibe, former Managing Director, NDDC, on his recent appointment as Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta.
