Abuja — Federal Government will buy six generators worth N4.6 billion to boost power generation at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, a senior airport official has said.
The General Manager Public Affair of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Akin Olukunle said the project was contracted to MANTRAC Nigeria Ltd.
He said the project has commenced and will be carried out in phases. He said the first stage of offshore sourcing requires the opening of a letter of credit to acquire the necessary foreign components.
Olukunle said in a statement that the first phase of the project gulped N1billion. He said the balance of N3.6 billion will be paid in 2010, when the project is expected to end.
He said a modern generator house will be built to accommodate the six generators.
Daily Trust learnt that MMIA power generating house has not been comprehensively rehabilitated since the airport was commissioned in 1978.
The existing 2.25 MVA generators are over 30 years old and can no longer cope with the current load demand, with increase in passengers and aircraft traffic.
Olukunle said that the poor state of the existing power generating set called for the upgrading of it to 3.88MW, which has all the necessary accessories to cope with the increasing load demand at the airport.
He said the envisaged 3.88MW capacity caterpillar generators would empower the central chillers for the cooling of the terminal in the event of failure of the primary power supply.
