Abuja — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday said it has not complied with the ruling of the Appeal Court, Calabar asking it to issue certificate of return to Chief Emmanel Obot because Bassey Etim is challenging the ruling at the Supreme Court.
Acting Director of Publicity of the Commission, Emmanuel Umenger, told Daily Trust yesterday in Abuja that as a law abiding institution, INEC would not do anything to violate the law of the land. He was reacting to media reports that the Court of Appeal Abuja has threatened to jail chairman of the commission, Professor Maurice Iwu and others for disobeying the ruling of its sister court in Calabar over the contentious Uyo Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State for the House of Representatives.
The appeal Court in Calabar had on February 12, ordered that a member representing Uyo Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom state in the House of Representatives, Hon. Bassey Etim, to vacate his seat to pave way for the swearing of Chief Emmanuel Obot, who had been declared winner of the April 2007 election.
