Liberia: MTA Rebuts Media Report

11 November 2009

Monrovia — The management of the Monrovia Transit Authority (MTA) says its attention has been drawn to a report in Friday, November 6, 2009 edition of the Renaissance Newspaper under the caption, "MTA Disappoints Commuters-Buses Collapse."

The Newspaper, in its report claimed that many, if not all, of the entity's buses are perpetually parked in its compound, situated in Gardnersvile, and that there are no signs of efforts to repair them.

The Newspaper also alleged that the management has repeatedly complained about limited capacity to repair the buses due to inadequate budgetary allotment and low revenue among other.

But the MTA management has described as "unfounded and untrue" the paper's report, arguing that the report is intended to undermine the entity's tireless efforts aimed at revamping the MTA, which before now was completely stagnant.

In a press statement, the MTA, management clarified that many of its buses are not perpetually parked contrary to the Newspaper's report, but instead some of the buses are going through routine maintenance.

The management further clarified that while it acknowledges that some of its buses are undergoing routine maintenance, it does not suggest that many, if not all, of the buses, are perpetually parked or collapsed as insinuated by the paper.

At the same time, the MTA management has termed as "misrepresentation of the fact" claim by the newspaper that it had repeatedly complained about limited capacity to repair the buses due to inadequate budgetary allotment and low revenue among others.

The MTA management states that at no point in time did it cite inadequate budgetary allotment, low revenue, among others as factors for its inability to repair its buses that are parked.

"What we had repeatedly stated is that there are processes through which Government institutions and businesses get funds from the Ministry of Finance [but we] had never complained about inadequate budgetary allotment, low revenue among others as factors for our inability to repair buses that are parked," the release noted.

The management further states that the Government has been very supportive of the MTA "and as we speak, Government has released funding to purchase spare parts to repair some of the buses that are parked".

"The management is concerned about the plight of the Liberia people, and we will continue to do everything possible to make transportation available to them."
