Sokoto — Digital equipment worth over N21 million has been procured by the Sokoto State Government to meet the June 12, 2009, deadline for broadcast organisation to meet digital target in the country.
The State's Commissioner of Information, Alhaji Dahiru Maishanu disclosed this to newsmen yesterday while presenting the digital equipment to the three GMs of the state owned media in Sokoto, in his office at the Giginya Secretariat Sokoto.
Maishanu, pointed out that, the state government has the state owned media at heart and that is why it decided to acquire the equipment to enable it compete favorably with their counterparts in the media sector in other states of the federation.
Maishanu stressed further that the gesture was aimed at digitalising state owned media stations through the provision of update equipment that will enhance service delivery.
The Commissioner also said that it is the responsibility of the government's to empower the staff of state owned media organizations in order to fulfill the aspirations of the government.
The Commissioner said, government would continue to accord priority to the training and retraining of media practitioners working in state owned media through the provision of modern gadgets and scholarship abroad, adding that a plan was in the pipeline to improve their welfare.
Maishanu urged the staff to utilise the equipments judiciously for the purposes they are meant for by safeguarding them.
The equipment presented to Rima TV, The Path newspapers and Rima Radio included: HBR Sony cameras, editing machines, digital tape recorders and other assorted digital equipment.
In his remark, the GM of the Path Newspaper, Malam Shekari commended the state government, adding that on their own part more commitment would be put in place to meet the yeanings and aspiration of the government.
