Bawku — THERE WAS total pandemonium at Natinga, a suburb of Bawku on Wednesday, when two men were arrested, severely beaten and one of them allegedly stripped naked by the military on the streets of Bawku.
According to a source in Bawku, a farmer was on his farm harvesting when a man wielding a gun shot at him, but missed narrowly. The source said after the incident, the assailants fled into the bush, but the sound of the gun shots attracted the attention of students of a nearby school, who deserted the school.
Soon after the shootings, two men, one of them believed to have done the shooting, and the other believed to be an accomplice were found at Natinga, near the Bawku hospital area. Meanwhile, the attention of the military had been drawn to the scene, where the shooting took place. When they intensified their search for the suspect, they later found Oto Justine, 26, a teacher, and Rasheed Bukari, unemployed, at Natinga, with one of them in a military uniform.
According to our source, the two suspects were severely beaten by the military before they were taking to the Bawku police station, where they were detained for questioning. The military, who briefed the Regional Minister, Mr. Mark Woyongo said they heard gun shots and when they rushed to the scene, they saw one of the suspects half naked with 34 rounds of AK 47 ammunitions on him.
Speaking to this correspondent, Mr. Woyongo said if the security personnel had access to an helicopter, they would have averted the situation, since they would have mounted an air surveillance in the area.
