Botswana: Stakeholders Give Volleyball Tourney Thumbs-Up

Stakeholders have given the just-ended Capital Motors BMW volleyball tournament the thumbs-up describing it as well organised. Kutlwano coach Isaac Samuel said unlike in the past, the officiating was top class.

He hailed the umpires' committee for assigning competent officials to handle matches. Kalavango coach, Lesedi Hule was impressed with the organisation of the tournament though he said there is still room for improvement. He complained of fixture congestion which led to fatigue. Hule prefers a knockout system where teams will play fewer games.

He said this has to be considered as teams play in open courts, exposing players to harsh weather. He said the standard of play in the semis and the final was high because the games were played indoors.

Bapoga Nshakazhogwe of Francistown based Diphatsa praised the tournament organisers and said the only challenge was that his club had to travel often to honour fixtures. He said although there are no proper facilities in the north, preliminary games should be held there as they do not require special courts.

Capital Motors representative, Michael Masunga said the event was staged without incident and the media could have given the games, particularly the first phase, more coverage. He could not say whether his company will sponsor next year's event. Instead, he challenged the Botswana Volleyball Federation (BVF) to engage the media more effectively in the next edition.

Tournament organiser Kagiso Meswele said their only challenge was the low turnout and low level of competition in the women's category. He said some teams confirmed participation but failed to honour fixtures. Meswele denied that fixtures were congested saying a team only played two matches a day. He said the teams were forced to play two matches in order to cut costs.
