Uganda: Museveni Says Army Officers 'Living Recklessly'

12 November 2009

President Museveni today told hundreds of people that attended the requiem mass for the late Maj. Gen. James Kazini at All Saints Church in Kampala that it was a shame that many senior army officers are dying due to 'reckless living'.

President Museveni who is also the Commander in Chief of the armed forces said almost all the commanders who led the National Resistance Army into power are dead because they led careless lives.

"Reckless living! We lost a lot of people when we came from the bush. All the commanders who captured Kampala are now dead except two. All the others are dead! Not from war but from lifestyle," President Museveni said.

Speaking at the service, Ms Naomi Kato, Gen. Kazini's elder sister defended her brother saying that his actions where only a 'cry for help'.

"I saw my brother so traumatized. I thought he had moved into a normal life without proper transition but I saw all his actions, he was crying out for help," Ms Kato said.

However for Gen. Kazini's widow, Phoebe, the past didn't matter. With a calm, steady voice she said that the mass was a celebration of a loving husband.

"I stand here to celebrate the life of my dear friend, father and husband James. Despite his busy schedule in government, he always found time for us. He has been a loving caring father. It will be hard to fill his gap but I strongly believe that god will fill his gap," Ms Kazini said.

Gen. Kazini was allegedly killed by his girlfriend, Lydia Draru on Tuesday morning after she hit him on the head with an iron bar
