Ahead of Saturday's hockey tourney code named - "The Chairman's Invitational Tournament," The Ghana Hockey Association (GHA) launched the tournament in Accra, yesterday.
The tournament, which bullies off this Saturday, and is supposed to end in the early parts of December, is the first to be organized by the Association, after hosting the Africa Hockey Cup for Nations.
And for the fixtures, Multistix will take on NDK, with Citizens facing Kumasi Seniors in the seniors category. Trustees will play Exchequers, while Tema Youth cross swords with Real Ambassadors.
The tournament will be in a league format, and will have the two top clubs at the end of the league going into a final game to determine the overall winner.
The GH¢ 10, 000 post Nations Cup event is under the sponsorship of the chairman of the Association.
Launching the Tournament, Mr. Oko Nikoi Djani, Chairman of GHA, said the event is part of efforts to promote the game in the country and sustain the momentum that came with the hosting of the last Africa Cup Hockley for Nations earlier this year.
He said, the tournament will be an annual event, though the 2009 edition is a serving as a replacement for the national hockey league.
Nikoi Djani, however, noted that the Invitational Challenge Tournament will run alongside the national league next year. He said the event which will be in two categories, of male and seniors will see the winners going home with trophies and cash prizes.
Nikoi Djani also said the Association will at the end of the event give awards like Discovery of the Tournament, Promising Player, Top Scorer and the Most Disciplined Player, adding that these awards will come with cash prizes. He however expressed worry over the absence of female teams in the competition, though they performed creditably in the Nations cup.
He announced that plans are in place to revive hockey in second cycle schools and the National Hockey Pitch will be used as the venue.
