Gambia: To Fight Against TB is to Fight Poverty - NLTP Manager

The manager of the National Leprosy Tuberculosis Programme, Adama Jallow has said that supporting the noble fight against tuberculosis, one of the world's deadly diseases is tantamount to fighting poverty.

He stated that TB has been described by health economics as a disease of poverty. He stressed that the battle against TB calls for greeter collaboration and partnership now than ever before. He made this statement recently at a workshop held at Paradise Suites Hotel in Kololi.

Jallow observed that tuberculosis is among diseases of great public health concern in the sub-Saharan Africa, including The Gambia. Therefore, he went on the NLTP would continue to collaborate with all stakeholders particularly policy makers in order to eradicate tuberculosis in The Gambia in accordance with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

He underscored that the influence of policy makers and relationship with communities could also be effectively utilised to bring about greater community involvement and participation in TB control. He revealed that the NLTP has registered significant achievements in TB control in The Gambia. For his part, the director of health sciences, Dr Sukai Camara stated that it is necessary to note that the TB epidemic poses a great public health concern in the sub-region, revealing that globally, more than two million people dies of the disease.

He indicated that 5% of new cases and death occur in developing countries. Camara hailed the efforts deployed over the years to combat the disease, noting that in the Gambia tremendous achievements has been made in the control of TB.
