A group of Gambian students last Monday left the Gambia for the Federal Republic of Nigeria to study law at the Igbinedion University, Benin City, Edo State.
The students are Abdourahman Bah, Binta Samura, Aisatou Pen, Mansour Jobe and Fatou Jeng. According to state counsel Major Buba Bojang, the students were given a partial scholarship package to study at the Igbinedion University in Benin City, Edo State in Nigeria.
Lawyer Bojang revealed that the scholarship was facilitated through the Attorney General's Chambers. He said the students will be staying in Nigeria for a five-year duration and after completing their course, they will return to serve their homeland (The Gambia). Major Bojang said the move is geared towards strengthening the capacity of the AGÂ's Chambers to carry out its functions.
He noted that the department is optimistic that these students, together with those who will be graduating from the University of The Gambia, will help fill the gap that is currently held by technical assistance lawyers at the chambers. Lawyer Bojang explained that technical assistance would then be in the form of giving the corps of Gambian lawyers the necessary exposure and practical training to enable them to take over from the technical assistance experts.
