Harare — Taruvinga Manjokota is like a proverbial prophet who is loved and appreciated by those not from his own village but outside and until now those who never listened to his music don't know what they are missing.
Popularly known to his fans as Sugar Sugar, the goatie-bearded sungura musician commands a huge following in Mozambique as well as the remote parts of Chipinge and Malawi. His music reminds many of the legendary Mukoma Ketai of the Simba Brothers but his has a unique touch that makes him a great artist.
The Juliana hitmaker is often relegated to the peripheries of the spotlight and yet he is one of the music ambassadors of Zimbabwe who is taking the music to great heights. This Friday, Sugar Sugar and his Samaita Stars are billed to perform at Joy Centre Makoni where he is expected to rock the crowds. Fans can look forward to a jam-packed gig spiced by his hits that include Ndokubasa, Ndiregererewo and Zvinorwadza, a track he dedicates to his mentor the late Ketai. The party continues when the joint hosts the Joy Centre Lion Larger Summer Festival on Saturday.
The gig starts at 1pm and topping the bill is Kapfupi and his Orchestra Ndozvo. The comedian-cum-musician is popular for his performances that include drama/comedy on his repertoire. His debut album Uchakanga Wire is a favourite of many show goers. Other musicians expected to perform include Moses Rwizi and his Kanindo Jazz Band alongside Boys and Girls DzeLauto.
