Zambia: Solwezi By-Election Candidate Promises Jobs

13 November 2009

AN independent candidate in next Thursday's Solwezi Central parliamentary by-election has pledged to open a constituency farm to create employment opportunities if elected as the Member of Parliament (MP).

Thomas Kafula said on an Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) programme on Solwezi Radio that he planned to secure mortgages for workers including civil servants.

Mr Kafula, who at 32 years old is the youngest of the four candidates, said his vision was to transform the face of Solwezi Central constituency into a place where people would be happy to settle down and not just to do business.

The engineering artisan said that his interest for Solwezi was undivided.

"I work here, I stay here, my family is here and I know the hardships people face," he said.

And being the youngest, the First Quantum Minerals (FQM) miner said he was the best candidate as he still had a lot of energy to push his agenda as an MP.

"Leadership should start at a younger age. Whatever I am promising as a young man I will do," he said.

Forum for Democratic Alternatives, Muhammad Kalela said during another ECZ radio programme that he was the best candidate as he hailed from Chief Kapijimpanga within the constituency.

Mr Kalela, 56, a human resource practitioner said his values were honesty, sincerity and hard work and if elected MP he would change the constituency and make people happy.

"When I am in, I will make the people happy, they will be dancing," he said.

The other candidates for the November 19 by-election are Albert Chifita of the MMD, Watson Lumba of the Patriotic Front (PF)-United Party for National Development (UPND) Pact.
