Sixteen people were yesterday feared dead when a taxi they were travelling in was hit and compressed by a truck loaded with cement in Mabira Forest.
The incident happened at around 4pm but by 8pm, the police were still struggling to haul the truck, registration number UAM 905B, off the taxi wreckage.
According to the police, the truck was heading to Kampala when it was diverted by road constructors off its lane which is believed to have led it to lose balance. The truck sat on the taxi registration UAG 100R that was heading to Jinja.
According to eyewitnesses, the 14-seater taxi had 16 occupants but by press time Daily Monitor hadn't established the actual number of deaths.
The driver, a one Mukasa, and his conductor Richard were said to have died by press time.
This is the second deadly accident in two days. On Wednesday, a bus overturned in Mubende District killing eight of its occupants.
According to last year's police report, 2,488 people died and 10,918 sustained serious injuries in motor accident.
In 2007, 14,390 accidents were reported with 2,334 fatalities, 9,277 serious injuries and 2,779 minor injuries.
