Kampala — GULU district authorities on Wednesday destroyed another 1,092 jerrycans of the killer waragi that has claimed 28 lives so far.
The resident district commissioner, Col. Walter Ochora, said a joint operation by the Police, LCs and internal security organisations would continue to crackdown on the waragi traders and impound vehicles transporting it.
Addressing residents at the Kaunda Grounds in Gulu district during the destruction of the waragi, Ochora warned dealers to desist from ferrying it or risk arrest and prosecution in court.
He advised business people to pursue other ventures, adding that all waragi joints would be closed if the sellers did not heed the advice.
Gulu district chairman Norbert Mao urged the community to join the fight against poisonous waragi and save lives.
Mao said the local government had a bigger role to play and would soon set up laws to stop the sale of the waragi.
He said the crackdown would help the Police fight crime in the region since most crimes like murder and domestic violence were committed under the influence of alcohol.
