POLICE Inspector General Sebastian Ndeitunga has given the assurance that the Police will be on high alert for political violence countrywide this weekend, especially in the North where the RDP and Swapo are hosting rallies at Ondangwa and Oshakati on the same day.

Ndeitunga told The Namibian that he had ordered the Police to arrest anyone who made themselves guilty of politically motivated violence or intimidation.

He said the Police had the capacity to deal with those who disturb the peace.

"I gave instructions that no chaos should prevail," Ndeitunga said, adding that such incidents are ruining Namibia's reputation as a peaceful country.

Last weekend the Police arrested seven people who were allegedly involved in political unrest at Outapi.

Some of the suspects have been released on bail while others are free on warning until their next court appearance.
