Uganda: IHK Cleans Namuwongo

International Hospital Kampala staff members have been cleaning up their neighbourhood as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility. IHK staff and community members last week cleaned up the area between Tank Hill roundabout and the hospital.

"This is one of the ways for us to give back to the community that has been extremely supportive of our work at the hospital. Cleaning the area is our way of extending appreciation by offering a vital service," explained IHK's Non-clinical Operations Manager, Sarah Nantumbwe.

She added that the hospital's community day is in line with the values of IHK and its parent company International Medical Group (IMG) that has undertaken various community projects ever since it was founded in 1996.

"We plan to roll out to other areas in Makindye Division in the coming year. We do this sort of activity in conjunction with the community depending on the response that we get from them," said Doreen Muhebwa, IHK Quality Assurance and Environmental Manager.

She added that the hospital offers free or subsidised medical services to a number of orphanages and babies' homes in Kampala and upcountry. International Medical Group (IMG) also offers rehabilitation services like orthopaedic and plastic surgery to formerly abducted children through Concern Parents Association.

The hospital offers rehabilitation services to acid survivors under Acid Survivors' Foundation Uganda on top of sponsoring children from the North for further studies. Collaborations were made with Hima Cement to allow voluntary counselling and testing for HIV for people in the community at their factory clinic.

Touch Namuwongo is another project the hospital intends to carry out, whereby people in the vicinity can get access to basic healthcare through immunisation, family planning and health talk programmes.
