A total of l6 Tanzania universities will take part in the national qualifying tournament whose finalists will take part in the annual Zain African Challenge event.
This was said yesterday by the corporate social responsibility manager of Zain Tanzania, Ms Tunu Kavishe, when she spoke to journalists in Dar es Salaam.
She said from the tournament four universities will be selected to participate in the Zain African Challenge to be held in Uganda next year.
She said the qualifying rounds will be held in Dar es Salaam. Later, the selected universities will meet to put up a joint strategy that will ensure they emerge winners during the continental event.
Ms Kavishe said in the coming event the number of participating universities has been increased from the ten of last year to 16.
She said this showed that more universities are rising to the challenge of intellectual competition in the country. She explained that the event was part of Zain's corporate social responsibility programme which largely focuses on education.
It highlights the excellent educational opportunities offered at African universities.
However, she said it was a pity that Tanzanian students did not perform well during the past international challenges. But she believed this was a challenge that would make Tanzania universities perform better this time.
She said the performance of Tanzania students was below par probably because of lack of exposure.
However, this time they would use several criteria to select participants, including exposure and general knowledge, she said, explaining: "During the last continental event the Ibadan University from Nigeria emerged victorious, and this is
because they have enough general knowledge as well as exposure.
"So this time we are going to ensure that our participants also meet those essential attributes to enable them emerge victorious."
Ms Kavishe added that the four Tanzania universities to be selected will join others from Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Ghana, Nigeria and Sierra Leon at the international championship in Uganda.
