Kampala — Fibre optic cables to provide internet broadband to Rwanda are expected to reach the Katuna border post in December, a firm laying the cables said this weekend.
"Connecting Katuna to Kigali will take another one month, hence completing the project in January 2010," Fred Sewe, the chief executive of Green Future, said.
The development follows a backhaul solution secured for Rwanda by uganda telecom and Rwandatel, on the two regional players' terrestrial networks between Kampala and Kigali.
The project, which aims to make bandwidth affordable to the masses, employs 5,000 Ugandans and will run through Kampala, Mpigi and Masaka, Sewe add.
"There was no optic fibre cable connection in Kampala making it purely microwave. As a stop gap measure, Green Future Limited has connected Kampala to Kigali through microwave creating a 30MG capacity," Sewe said.
The company's target is to complete 40km which is half a kilometre per hour, he added.
