Nigeria: Kano Bans Roadside Fuel Sales

Kano — In its efforts to find a lasting solution of rampant roadside fire accidents, Kano State government has banned the sale of petroleum products outside filling stations. This was disclosed by the Commissioner of Information, Barr. Haruna Isa Dederi, while speaking to newsmen after the State Executive Council meeting . He said the council has also banned the sale of petroleum products by the filling stations to anyone engaged in this illegal business, explaining that henceforth, "Bunburutu" in any form is banned and after two weeks from last Wednesday, the state government will apply sanctions on anyone caught selling petroleum products by the roadside. Barr. Dederi stated that the state government has the constitutional right to safeguard the lives and properties of its citizens, revealing that "this illegal business has been a serious danger to our society whereby a similar incidence occurred along Gyadi-Gyadi, Road as a result of which many people lost their lives". Meanwhile, the commissioner has said that the State Executive Council has approved the sum of N1,894, 971,000 for the construction of a three-lane dual carriageway along Kofar-Kabuga-Kofar Waika-Kofar Ruwa. According to him, this was in response to the persistent calls from the general public that the road should be made three lane dual carriageway, in view of its strategic importance. Also, the council has approved the sum of N113,500,000 for the furnishing of the newly-created High Court Divisions at Dambatta, Gaya, Tudun Wada, Rano, Gwarzo and the two Kano Central Divisional High Courts, as well as general renovation of Norman's Land and Gyadi-Gyadi Magistrate Court complexes in addition to the renovation of Judges' residences. Similarly, the council approved the sum of N44,945,618.55 to Sharia Court of Appeal for the construction of Sharia Court Department within the premises of the Audu Bako Secretariat. Also, the sum of N29,370,000 was approved for the furnishing of the court rooms and chambers of Kano State Pent Tribunal that were earlier built by the government. During the meeting, the council expressed its condolence to the families of those who lost their lives as a result of the Gyadi-Gyadi fire incident and sympathised with those who sustained injuries.
