12 November 2009

Kano — Kano State Commissioner of Education, Alhaji Musa Salihu has revealed that the sum of N522,553,677.55 has been set aside by the Kano State government for the repairs and renovation work at GSS Karaye Unity School.

Salihu made the revelation when he paid an inspection visit to the school, saying the work is part of government's investment in quality education.

The commissioner further pointed out that the general renovation will affect the academic area, staff quarters, hostel block, as well as external works and projects. He maintained that the work at Karaye became necessary in view of the wear and tear of the school as a result of old age and pressure from over-enrolment. According to him, the school was established in 1977 and meant to accommodate 1,100 but now it has 1,700 enrolment, 500 students from other Northern states and 1, 200 Kano state indigenes.

The commissioner added that government had already taken some measures as part of Kano State Road Map for economic development - investing in quality education where six schools benefited. They are Jogana, GGC Dala and others at Gwarzo, D/Kudu, D/Tofa and Rano. He revealed that about 1,000 classrooms are currently under construction while furniture and other instructional materials are being provided.
