Namibia: Police at Wenela Border Post Intimidate Passengers

Windhoek — Police checkpoints between Katima Mulilo and the Wenela border post are causing inconvenience to the passagers travelling from Zamibia.

According to Mr Kevin Kamalata, manager and shareholder of the Zambia-Namibia Express, there were complaints from customers saying that the Namibian police at the checkpoints intimidate them and that the loading and offloading of buses is wasting unneccessary time.

"The passengers feel intimidated by the police because they ask Namibian passengers what they are doing on Zambian buses," he said. The first police checkpoint is situated close to theWenela border post and another about 100km further on at the Kongola bridge. At both checkpoints, drivers and passengers are regularly instructed to disembark for a routine search. Passengers complain that they also have to offload their baggage. Afterwards, everything has to be loaded again.
