Ghana: Moshie Zongo Elders Denounce Assemblyman

Kumasi — CHIEFS AND Imams constituting themselves as Moshie Zongo Council of Chiefs as well as members of the Moshie Zongo Market Development Committee and Unit Committees have called for the withdrawal of Mr. Kwabena Nsenkyere as Assemblyman for the Dichemso Electoral area.

About 29 signatories have petitioned the Metro Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) for the attention of the Electoral Commission. The petitioners complained that Nsenkyere had since assumption of office not co-operated with members of the Unit committee, Chiefs and people of the Moshie Zongo community to initiate development under the Community Development agenda.

The assemblyman has been accused of diverting two projects to Dichemso and Brahabebome, instead of Moshie Zongo because he (Nsenkyere) reportedly claimed that the community did not support his bid to contest the chairmanship of the Area Council, an act they think is inimical to the development of the community.

They said Nsenkyere had also stood in the way of Moshie Zongo Market Development Committee's plan to remove all unauthorized structures which harbour criminals.

Besides the allegation that the assemblyman once insulted the Chief of Moshie Zongo and his elders during a council of chiefs meeting to which he was invited, he is also accused of discouraging residents from contributing to community levy collection which caters for the upkeep of the members of Old Tafo Public Cemetery and Neightbourhood Watch Committees, which supports the police in protecting lives and property in the area. Mr. Nsenkyere is said to have refused to retract those insulting words against the community leaders.

The petitioners, including Alhaji Salifu Adamu, Chief of Moshie Zongo and chairman of the local Market Development Committee, Alhaji Mahama Barri, Alhaji Abdulai Banda , Mustapha Bondong, Kwame Adjawudje and Adamu Kasen as heads of Hausa, Banda, Sisala , Ewe and Builsa community in the electoral area respectively, have expressed their readiness to co-operate with the Electoral Commission if it intends to hold a referendum on the issue of no confidence in the assemblyman.

Other signatories of the petition are Ibrahim Osman (Deputy Chief Imam), Isaac Agyemang (Asante head), Abdulai Gruma (Gruma head), Abanga Kusasi (Kusasi chief), John Ibrahim Wekem (Kasena Nankana head), and Baba Adombila (Frafra head).

The rest of the petitioners are members of the Market Development Committee and local Unit committees.

Reacting to the complaints, Mr. Nsenkyere said his accusers have no case and that the allegations are not true and, therefore, have no basis. He also debunked the claim that the petitioners are chiefs. "I am a royal of Dichemso and see none of them (petitioners) as a chief," he indicated.
