Kenya: Four Charged Afresh in Sh22 Million Heist

13 November 2009

Nairobi — A Nairobi lawyer and three policemen were on Friday charged afresh with stealing Sh22 million belonging to G4S security firm.

Lawyer Justus Okemwa Areba, 46, was jointly charged with Administration Police officers George Otieno Oguso, 30, Jeremiah Ogendo Nyakweba, 24, and Stephen Kipsiele Lang'at, 32.

They denied two charges of theft and neglect to prevent a felony before Kibera.

Chief Inspector Francis Ndiema, prosecuting, told the court that the police had completed their investigations and that he had prepared a charge-sheet which he wanted to substitute.

In the first charge, the four were accused of jointly stealing the money. And in the second count Mr Oguso, attached to a judge, was jointly charged with Mr Nyakweba and Mr Lang'at, from the Uhuru AP Camp, with neglect to prevent a felony.

The accused stole US$300,000 (about Sh22 million) the property of G4S Security Company Ltd, from Mr Josphat Mwagafwa Kizonguna, the court heard.

The accused, alongside others not in court, allegedly committed the offences at CFC Stanbic Bank in Westlands, Nairobi, on November 6.

The prosecutor said that on the same day, knowing that an offence of theft was about to be committed, the police officers failed to use reasonable means to prevent the commission or completion of the offence.

The accused were released on a Sh3 million bond with a surety in similar amount or Sh1 million cash bail each, until January 14, next year, when trial begins.
