Zimbabwe: Cossy Rules in Division One

Harare — THE farming and mining town of Kadoma has been in the spotlight of late following accusations that some Kadoma United players allegedly threw a key Zifa Division One match on the final day of a dramatic season.

Harare club Douglas Warriors accused a number of Kadoma United players of acting improperly, during their final league match against Simba Stars in Shamva, which the local side lost 0-8.

The dispute is still before the Zifa disciplinary committee.

Kadoma United, known here as Yematomati, were relegated following that massacre in Shamva.

Now, there is reason for the people of this town to smile, following the triumph of local side, Cossy Rules FC, in their Division Two campaign this season.

Cossy Rules will be playing in Division One next season after winning the Mashonaland West Division 2B league in style.

Owned by a young and ambitious Kadoma businessman, Cosmas Daka, Cossy Rules beat seasoned campaigners like Chegutu Pirates, David Whitehead, Eiffel Flats and Kadoma City Jets to win the championship.

Most of the competitive football in Kadoma has been played by teams from the town's oldest high-density suburb, Rimuka, but -- for a refreshing change -- Cossy Rules FC are from Waverley.

That is why Daka has, overnight, become an instant hero in Waverley and his team has given scores of young men in the suburb reason to believe in the future.

Daka built his team on the foundation of a strong youth policy, starting his project in 2006, and three years down the line, he now has a Division One franchise.

He almost abandoned the project, at one stage, but was advised by his closest friend Tongai Moyo of the Utakataka Express not to throw in the towel.

Daka also received a lot of support from Gunners' owner Cuthbert Chitima.

"Make no doubt about it, we are not in the league just to add up the numbers," Daka told The Herald.

"If the players can perform to their potential and overcome the weight of expectation, I think that we can go very far and even emulate Gunners and qualify for the Premiership.

"Chitima gave me a lot of support and inspired me a lot and I want to achieve a lot as a way of showing him that he was right to believe that we could do it."

Daka, who sometimes also plays for his team, said they had grand plans for Cossy Rules.

Team manager Welcome Phiri was also confident that they will make a huge impact.

"I would like to pay tribute to the players, officials and all those who have been involved in the team, directly or indirectly, for making our dreams come true,"' said Phiri.

"It was a long journey but we are happy that we have finally made it."
