Zambia: State's Move On Fake Medicines Hailed

16 November 2009

THE Pharmaceutical Society of Zambia (PSZ) has commended the Government's commitment to combating counterfeit medicines.

PSZ president, Bonaventure Kasama said in an interview that his society was active in combating the vice and wanted all stakeholders to come on board.

Mr Kasama said PSZ aimed at providing the best pharmaceutical service to patients and would not stand for counterfeit medicines.

He said this in reaction to the Government warning against pharmacists who deal in counterfeit and expired drugs.

Mr Kasama said pharmacists were expected to observe the highest standard of practice and that those found wanting should be dealt with accordingly.

"We urge our members to ensure that they stick to good pharmacy principals at all times," he said.

He said his organisation played an important role in pharmacy and urged willing organisations to partner with it to enhance the fight for proper medicines.

That was why the establishment of a national drug quality control laboratory was important so that all medicines coming into the country were tested.

He said the sooner the laboratory was set up, the more the fight against counterfeit medicines would be enhanced.

Mr Kasama advised the Pharmaceutical Regulatory Authority to step up efforts in curbing illegal sale of medicines.

He said there were many illegal shops around the country that were selling drugs and needed to be closed down immediately.
