HEAVY rains accompanied by strong winds that hit Aus over the past weekend resulted in livestock losses.

Thomas Ipinge, who farms at Aus, said he lost 80 goats because of the rain, which lasted more than 16 hours on Sunday.

He said a neighbour of his lost 24 goats.

"We're happy for the downpours, but did not expect that it would result in livestock losses," said Ipinge.

Ipinge said it was the third consecutive year he had lost livestock due to heavy rainfall in the area.

Weatherman Victor Kaurimuje yesterday said the weather office could not provide the exact rainfall figures recorded at Aus because the settlement had experienced communication problems.

Kaurimuje said a cold front that had passed through the sub-continent was responsible for the rain. He said the front had passed and no more rain was expected in the South.

The frontal system also resulted in temperatures plummeting.

Kaurimuje said normal summer temperatures should return by today.
