Umuahia — National coordinator of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Diaspora, Dr. Mitshell Nnanta has expressed deep concern over the detention of 517 Igbo in Liberia for criminal charges and sundry offences, and called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to look into the plights of Igbo in foreign lands.

The chieftain raised the alarm while addressing journalists in Umuahia after he was conferred with Honorary Doctorate degree in Humanity by Morns Cerullo Christian University in affiliation with Pacific Western University, San Diego California, USA.

According to him, 215 detainees have been released following the intervention of Ohanaeze in Diaspora and his personal international connections, and called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, to initiate moves for the release of the remaining detainees.

He blamed the miserable economic conditions in Nigeria for the exodus of Nigerians who flee the country daily in search of greener pasture abroad and called on the federal government to take urgent steps towards improving the living conditions of the citizenry as a way of stemming the tide.

Dr. Nnata regretted that due to lack of employment opportunities and severe economic hardship ravaging the country, Nigeria has continued to lose its best brains daily and lambasted President Umaru Musa Yaradua's administration for failing to transform the economy of Nigeria barely three years after mounting the leadership saddle.

He however, condemned in strong terms the inglorious attitudes of some crime- prone Nigerians in Diaspora, who by their unpatriotic activities and unwholesome behaviours drag the image of the country to the mud, arguing that no excuse can justify criminality.

Speaking further, Nnata applauded the Ambassador Ralph Uweche- led Ohanaeze leadership for enthroning peace, sanity and unity in the apex Igbo socio-political organization, and called on the Igbo political elite to wave their political inclinations and work harmoniously before 2015 general elections, if the much-talked about Nigerian President of Igbo extraction would not remain a mirage.
