Abuja — President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua has pledged Federal Government's strong support to the team of experts and government officials going to Copenhegan in Denmark to represent the country at the climate change conference taking place in December, 2009.

The President's word of assurance was conveyed to the negotiators during a round-table meeting in Abuja by the Minister of Environment, Mr. John Odey.

Odey quoted the President as having appealled to negotiators who will be representing Nigeria at Copenhagen Summit to work together as a team to get a fair deal for the country.

The Minister noted that the impact of Climate Change is already here with us and that Nigeria like other developing nations will bear the brunt most if nothing is done to mitigate the consequences.

He reminded the team that the Copenhagen Summit is a business one and a big challenge which they should rise up to in order to ameliorate the impacts of climate change.

Speaking at the occasion, Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Dr. Mohammed Barkindo, thanked the Federal Government for giving them the opportunity to serve the country.

He commended the Minister for providing the needed leadership for the team to be able to perform. Barkindo added that Nigeria for the first time will be attending this kind of summit with a common position. According to him with the team of seasoned experts assembled, Nigeria will get a fair deal in Copenhagen.
