Nigeria: 'Fifteen Cattle Routes in North East Soon'

15 November 2009

Abuja — Plans are underway by the Federal Government to establish additional 15 international stock routes across the north eastern states with a view to check mating the frequent clashes between farmers and pastoralists especially at border areas.

This was disclosed by Engineer Usman Dumana of the National livestock Projects Division (NLPD) at a sensitization and mobilization workshop on international stock route development in the region.

He said glaziers are expected to show interest in this regard and to make use of the routes in accordance with the laid down rules.

He said stock route development involves the establishment of resting points for animals at intervals of about 150km along the route.

He said resting point consists of a building equipped with such facilities as an office, veterinary clinic with drugs, feed store and borehole with water trough.

The Lamido of Adamawa Dr Aliyu Mustapha represented by Dan Galadiman Adamawa expressed concern that stock routes have been existing from time immemorial but neglected.

He said this situation has resulted in frequent clashes between farmers and pastoralists and sometimes so intense that human and materials losses are enormous.
