Abuja — Determined to deliver its mandate to the motoring public, the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has threatened to sanction contractors handling various road maintenance projects whose jobs fail within six months of completion.

Chairman, FERMA Board Committee on Engineering and Monitoring, Engr. Abdul-Azeez Umaru who gave the warning while inspecting the ongoing work on Abuja-Suleja-Minna road, said, contractors would be held responsible for any failure on roads handled by them within six months. He also warned contractors to strictly adhere to the application of specific design and materials or risk being blacklisted.

According to him, "this is a new dimension to project supervision by the agency and we will be paying unprecedented surprise visits to all our project sites to ensure Nigeria has the value for money been spent on the roads".

Engr. Umaru who insisted that quality material must be used and a serious analysis of asphalt mix must be carried out before they are used on the roads, added however, the agency would only patronise contractor who does a good job.

Engr. Umaru who frowned at a situation where contractors will cut off some portions on the highways only to be abandoned for long period of time, said any marked and cut portion along the highways must be patched before the following day.

Earlier, the contractor handling the Abuja-Suleja-Minna road project had informed the team that, in spite of heavy down pour in the recent times, it was able to patch some potholes of 30 kilometres stretch from Minna.
