Uganda: DP's Ssebaana Sued Over Party Cards

The Democratic Party legal adviser, Mr Anthony Kiwanuka and two others are in court seeking to block party officials led by their leader John Ssebaana Kizito from distributing membership cards. They say the act is illegal.

Mr Kiwanuka, Prince Joe Nakibinge and Mr James Ochola Ojiki have filed an application asking court to nullify the appointment of Mr Issa Kikungwe to print and distribute party cards.

According to the applicants, Mr Kikungwe's appointment is a nullity since it was done in a meeting convened by Mr Kizito, contrary to the party constitution.

The applicants are accusing Mr Kizito, the party's National Council and National organising secretary of issuing the cards to members without following the right procedure.

The fears

According to the applicants, the authentic party cards are issued by the national treasurer and the national organising secretary after a resolution of the National Executive Council.

They contend that members will use the cards for voting during the National Executive Council, an act which they contend is illegal.

They want court to declare Kikungwe's appointment illegal as well as declare the party cards printed and distributed by him illegal.

Recently, court nullified the appointment of Mr Mathias Nsubuga as the party's secretary general.
