Nairobi — Two people have been killed in two incidents in Marakwet District. In the first incident, a 17-year-old boy was on Friday shot dead and three of his relatives injured by robbers in Kapkochur village.

According to Marakwet district officer Salim Bakana, seven men armed with AK-47 rifles raided the home of Mr Chelawa Yator, a retired teacher, at 1am.

"It appears the robbers had information that the retired teacher had visited Kitale Town during the day to follow up the processing of his retirement benefits," Lelan Ward councillor David Yano said.

They ordered the old man to open the door and surrender the money he had been advanced and threatened to kill him if he dared to raise the alarm.

However, his son Isaac Yator, who was sleeping in an adjacent house, raised the alarm. He was shot in the head and the stomach and died instantly.

The other family members were also shot and were taken to Africa Inland Church Kapsowar Mission Hospital.

The attackers fled without stealing anything after villagers responded to the family's distress call.

Mr Bakana said police officers from Kapcherop and Kapsowar police stations were tracking down the killers who escaped towards the nearby Kabolet forest, a notorious hideout for criminals.

In another incident, a 16-year-old pupil who had been missing for three days in Marakwet West District was yesterday found dead.

The body of Cleophas Maiyo, a Standard Seven pupil at Kapchebit Primary School in Chemunada Location, was found in Chemunada forest by a herder during a search mounted by villagers. He was living with his aunt.

Area police chief Dido Galgalo said there were reports that the boy had quarrelled with a Ugandan farmhand alleged to have been living with his aunt.

Angry villagers cornered the man yesterday morning at Kapchebit trading centre and lynched him.

Administration police officers tried to save him by firing in the air to disperse the mob that had set him ablaze.
