Harare — The Zimbabwe Defence Forces play an important role as guarantors of the peace and a stable environment necessary for business to thrive, a Cabinet minister has said.
Speaking at the 2009 Zimbabwe National Army Commander's Annual Charity Race in Harare yesterday, Defence Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa, said the ZDF were an integral component of economic turnaround.
He hailed the ZDF-private sector partnership in transforming lives through such initiatives as the Commander's Charity Race, which was established in 1997 with a view to alleviating poverty among the less privileged.
"The 2009 ZNA Charity Race was running under the theme 'Shared vision, smart partnerships and collective responsibilities for the welfare of army personnel'.
"This aptly summarises our shared vision with regards to the Zimbabwe National Army, our partnership with the corporate world and the collective responsibilities that we have all assumed," he said
The minister paid tribute to companies that assisted in making the race a success.
"I am thrilled by the continued support for this event from various companies, which in itself demonstrates the good rapport that exists between the military, the business community and the general public," he said. Minister Mnangagwa said donations in excess of US$60 000 in cash and pledges had been received this year.
These will go to a trust fund that assists army personnel and their families in dire need and these include orphans, widows and those in need of medical attention.
Mashonaland Turf Club provided the race venue for free, in addition to donating its expertise and other resources.
