Harare — Police and the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe last Wednesday launched a traffic awareness campaign in Harare to educate motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to obey traffic regulations.
They moved around the central business district distributing flyers and roses to motorists and pedestrians.
The flowers, a "sign of love", were dished out to pedestrians and motorists to value lives on the country's roads.
This follows a series of fatal car accidents and hit-and-run incidents.
Motorists were warned against speeding and drinking and driving, among other offences. They were also warned not to use cellphones when driving, to fasten their seat belts and drive with due care.
Pedestrians were advised to use designated crossing points.
Commuter omnibus drivers are notorious for causing congestion in the CBD, especially during peak hours, and were told to only pick up and drop off passengers at designated points. Police said motorists should ensure that their vehicles were in good condition and wipers were functional.
The campaign will continue to maintain sanity on the capital's streets.
