Abuja — The Nigerian Army has refuted a report by a national daily that plans were underway to court-martial a General and a Colonel over a multibillion naira housing scheme.

A press release yesterday, which was signed by Brig.Gen. Chris Olukolade, director, army public relations, said the report by the newspaper was not only a ploy to discredit the Post Service Homes (Savings and loans) Limited, but the Nigerian Army as a whole.

The army recalled that a press release was issued by it on the issue on April, 1, 2009, announcing its resolve to reposition the PHL housing programme for effective and sustainable service delivery to subscribers.

"Consequently, an audit of PHL had been constituted and the findings submitted to the appropriate authorities.

However, the recommendations of the audit are yet to be digested by army headquarters, let alone warrant the setting up of a court-martial to try anybody.

It could be unnecessarily pre-emptive and erroneous to insinuate that there is a large-scale fraud in the scheme," the release read in part.

It reaffirmed the determination of the Nigerian Army to maintain discipline among its officers and that the drive to reposition PHL for efficiency had commenced and is achieving satisfactory results.

According to it, "The appropriate corporate government measures have been installed and now operational towards ensuring that subscribers are duly protected and benefited in line with the objectives of the scheme."

It enjoined the general public to disregard the publication of the Daily Sun and continue to have trust and goodwill for sthe PHL.
