Nigeria: Presbyterian Church Holds Conference

14 November 2009

Lagos — Moderator of the General Assembly of The Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, The Rt. Rev. Dr. Ubon Bassey Usung, has identified the gradual decline of religious, moral and national values amongst Nigerians as the bane of the Nigerian society.

In a statement signed by the Director of Information & Public Affairs, Rev Kalu Ume,

said the Moderator lamented the situation in which Nigerians glorified materialism and encouraged the unbridled quest for prosperity, whether by fair or foul means.

He said this was responsible for the alarming rate of crime and social vices in Nigeria such as armed robbery, kidnapping, ritual murder, advance fee fraud (419), human trafficking, drug offences, etc.

The cleric said it was in order to contribute towards reversing this trend that the Church was putting together a national convention to re-generate a sense of values amongst Nigerians. This, he hoped, would enable Nigeria re-gain its growth momentum according to God's plans.
