Africa: Traditional Rulers Urged to Apologise On Slave Trade

Kaduna — Following the resolution of the US Senate on June 18, formally apologising for fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality and inhumanity of slavery and the noticeable attempts by some heads of governments, and global opinion leaders to wash off the blights and stains regarding the roles they played in the trans-Saharan and trans-Atlantic slave trade, some Nigerian traditional rulers having been asked to apologise to Africans on behalf of their ancestors.

Human rights activist and social critic, Malam Shehu Sani stated this on behalf of the Civil Rights Congress (CRC) in an open letter to the Sultan of Sokoto, Oba of Benin, Obong of Calabar, Ooni of Ife, and Oba of Lagos, which was made available to LEADERSHIP WEEKEND in Kaduna, part of which reads, "The poaching of these innocent and defenseless Africans, in the name of slavely started in the early part of the 13th century, when the African continent was rampaged and plundered by European and American slave riders, who forcefully snatched energetic men and women and took them abroad to work in plantations and factories. Regretably, most of the African traditional rulers, participated by collaborating and colluding with the slave raiders in the enslavement of African people.

"Traditional rulers acquired an inglorious reputation of engaging in the act of slave trade, helping to systematically raid and kidnap people from weak and defenseless communities or villages and then trading them off with Europeans, American and other collaborators. At the plantation, the captured slaves were then subjected to various forms of inhuman, cruel and degrading treatment.

On the negative implications of the slave trade on Africa, the letter further reads, "Today, the impact and the devastating consequences of the crime of slavery on the lives of millions of Africans in the diaspora and the continent continues. The impact of slavery led to permanent demographic changes, irreversible and painful displacement and perpetual dislocation of closely blended families. Apart from slowing down social reform and innovation in statecrafts in the kingdom of Africa, it equally contributed to the deculturalisation and force values and beliefs on Africans, it promoted unending wars, chaos in the African continent, and also heightened sense of inferiority in Africans.

Today, some Africans are treated as second class citizens in their countries and others discriminated against for a fault that is not theirs".

While calling for the apology in other to strengthen the human value of all Africans, as against the past experience of slavery, Sani appealled to the Nigerian traditional institutions, saying, "We cannot continue to blame the white men as Africans, particularly the traditional rulers, are not blameless in their involvement in slave trade. It is based on these realisations that I called on the Sultan of Sokoto,Alhaji Abubakar Sa'ad, to without delay or hesitation apologise to the families of the descendants of victims of slave trade on behalf of Northern Nigeria for the roles of his fore bearers in the trans-Saharan slave trade, and also called on the Oba of Benin, Obong of Calabar, Ooni of Ife, and Oba of Lagos to without delay and hesitation apologise to the descendants of the victims of trans-Atlantic slave trade".

We Black Africans are puzzling. We have a bounty of riches around us, yet we persist in allowing outsiders to steal them; while we fight each other over trivial matters.

Just in case you're wondering, here's some Black Africans who have done wondrous things to change the way we live in the world.

For example : Garrett-Augustus Morgan invented the Traffic Signal to CURB (no pun intended) TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS !!!

Over the next 23 years Léopold will amass a huge personal fortune by exploiting the Congo directly and by leasing concessions to private companies prepared to pay him 50% of their profits. The period will witness some of the worst atrocities ever committed on the African continent. However, Léopold will never visit the region, ruling instead by decree from Belgium.

I think such a comment or urgent explaination about traditional rulers urged to apologise on Slave Trade need to be discuss in front of the Africa Court of Law and the Africa Union. Why? This no easy task since the time of colonization Africa was a peaceful continent until Africa cultures and traditions were corrupted by the invaders. Our forefathers taught their participations was generous while they invaders very well knew that such a participation was evil and don't do anything about it until Africans began to educate themselves and realized the destructions they were creating and participating. Therefore, this matter needs to be discuss infront of the African Union, all other Organizations and the Law Courts in the Continental Africa. I bet you if that happens, there will be a lot of dirts coming out about the conspiracies of Africa and her people.
