Abuja — The Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Dr Christopher Anyanwu, has said that the Agency is determined to reform the power sector in the country.
Speaking at the a recent workshop on electric power market rules for stakeholders, the BPE boss said because of the desire to have an acceptable power reform in the country, the Bureau sought the best to help in the reform, including the design of the market rules.
He, therefore, urged participants, operators and stakeholders to take maximum advantage of the workshop to achieve the purpose.
A statement by the Head of Corporate Communications OF BPE, Mr. Chigbo Anichebe explained that the objectives of the workshop include increasing awareness of the market rules, explaining the rules and bringing clarity to their application and implementation.
Others include providing a forum for the successor companies and other stakeholders to express their concerns and subsequently resolve issues regarding market rules and provide the successor companies and stakeholders with support for the successful implementation of the market rules.
Dr.Anyanwu who was represented by his Special Assistant, Yunana Jackdell Malo, explained that the aims of the market rules are to establish and govern an efficient, competitive, transparent and reliable market for the sale and purchase of wholesale electricity and auxiliary services in Nigeria.
According to him, "The rules provide guideline for efficient operation of the electricity market in order to achieve the desired goals of increased competition and grid operating efficiencies, increased and improved service delivery, reliability and affordability and improved utilization of capacity in energy generation."
In her remarks, the Director of Electric Power at BPE, Ms Bolanle Onagoruwa, explained that it was an interactive forum to cross-fertilize ideas to better understand the market rules.
It would be recalled that President Umaru Musa Yar' Adua approved the market rules in February 2009, making it necessary for successor companies and stakeholders to come together to discuss and understand the implications and impact of the market rules.
The Lagos workshop, co-ordinated by Mercados Energy Markets International, has participants drawn from Eko, Ikeja, Ibadan, Benin and Egbin. The earlier workshop held at Enugu drew participants from Port Harcourt, Afam, Sapele, Ughelli and Enugu.)
