The donation of a new football kit from English Premier League side, Liverpool FC, has been received enthusiastically by the players and officials of the Gambia first division giants Steve Biko Football Club.
Mr Mike Cain and his wife Nikki Cain, both diehard fans of the Reds, travelled to Banjul last week to hand over the equipment, which included among others, football boots, tracksuits and football jerseys.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at the Bakau mini-stadium on Friday, Mike Cain who is also a regular visitor in the country, said the items are directly from the English premier tier club Liverpool who emphasized that they must go to a football club in the Gambia that will appreciate them. "These football equipment are directly from Liverpool Football Club. They were briefly used by the players and officials of the club before we were tasked to bring them to the Gambia and give them to a club that need them most and Steve Biko were the lucky beneficiaries," he said.
Commenting on the gesture, head coach of Steve Biko FC, Abdoulie Bojang, said: "We like to promote football among the youth and the local community but we have always lacked good equipment, and new sportswear is a big bonus. The players and staff of the team are thrilled with the new kit, and we are most grateful to Liverpool for providing it." Bojang, who led Steve Biko to a second-place finish last season said such a magnanimous gesture from a big club in Liverpool will also boost the morale of his players to even aim higher come next season. He promised the donours that the items would be put into good use.
